Flow Drill Screw (FDS)

  • Collaboration with Ford Motor Company (USA)

  • Aluminum sheet

  • Rigid screw

  • Numerical modeling

    • Material law: Johnson-Cook material model

    • Material failure: bond-failure model

    • Numerical method: Smoothed Particle Galerkin (SPG)

SPG with bond-failure model is able to simulate the forming of threads during FDS process, which is a very unique capability that no other method has in the literature. The force response curve shows that the formed threads continuously resist external load as the screw plunges and rotates.

The pull-out test is able to provide FDS joint strength along plunging direction.

The lap-shear of FDS joint shows quite different failure pattern compared to the pull-out test.
